#The_reader 더 리더 책읽어주는 남자, The meaning of Odyssey 오디세이의 의미 두 번째

지난 번에 이어서 영화이자 소설 The reader에서의 오디세이의 의미의 연속입니다.

지난 번에 발췌한 지문에 이어서 바로 이어지는 지문입니다.

I BEGAN WITH the Odyssey. I read it after Gertrud and I had separated. There were many nights when I couldn’t sleep for more than a few hours; I would lie awake, and when I switched on the light and picked up a book, my eyes closed, and when I put the book down and turned off the light, I was wide awake again. 

남자 주인공이 부인인 Gertrud와 헤어지고 나서 본격적으로 다시 한 번 오디세이를 읽어봅니다. 잠을 잘 자지 못하고 책을 읽었다 덮었다를 반복합니다.

So I read aloud, and my eyes didn’t close. And because in all my confused half-waking thoughts that swirled in tormenting circles of memories and dreams around my marriage and my daughter and my life, it was always Hanna who predominated, I read to Hanna. I read to Hanna on tape.

마지막에서 두 번째 줄의 문장들

이 문장들이 주인공의 상태를 가장 잘 대변해 줍니다. 어째서 이랬을까요? 여기까지는 저는 소설에 잘 몰입되지 않습니다. 어쨌든 주인공은 한나 (케이트 윈슬렛 분)를 위해 오디세이를 읽습니다.

그리고 제가 언어적으로 아름답다고 생각한 문장은 그 바로 윗 문장입니다.

And because in all my confused half-waking thoughts that swirled in tormenting circles of memories and dreams around my marriage and my daughter and my life, ...

이 부분은 대단히 문학적인 표현이라고 할까나? 우리 나라말로 쓰라고 해도 쓰기 어려운 표현을 영어로 간단하게 표현해내네요. 원래 문장은 독일어였겠지만요.

in my thoughts that swirled in tormenting circles 라는 부분이 특히 마음에 듭니다. 고통스럽게 휘몰아치는 생각들....

지금까지 제가 블로그에 올려 봤던 영어 표현 중에 제일 어려운 표현이 아닌가 싶습니다. 하지만 또 달리 생각해보면 이해하기 어려운 표현만은 아닌 것 같습니다.
