하퍼 리 Harper Lee의 파수꾼 Go set a watchman을 읽기 전의 두려움 #영어 #english

나는 내 블로그에서 모두 다 직접 읽어 본 것들을 올리고 있는데, 이번 책 하퍼 리 (Harper Lee)의 파수꾼 (Go set a Watchiman)책은 평이 엇갈려서 읽어야 할지 말아야 할지 결정 못하고 있다. 그래서 인터넷에서 서평을 몇 개 찾아보았다. 어젯 밤에 읽은 서평인 Sarah Churchwell이 The guardian에 올린 서평을 주로 참조하였다. #영어 #english

아래 서평을 보면 감은 잡히는데, 일단 두 달 정도 독자들의 평을 좀 기다려 보려 한다. Sarah에 의하면 일단 미학적으로 이 책은 To kill a mockingbird만큼 아름답지는 않다. 그리고 도덕적으로 의미가 있냐는 질문에는 그 대답이 ‘단순하지 않고 복잡하다' complicated 라고 썼다. 앵무새 죽이기는 내가 좋아하는 소설 3위권이기 때문에 이러한 선호를 망치고 싶지 않아서 파수꾼이 좋은 책인지 아닌지를 사람들이 평하는 것을 것을 좀 보고 나서 사고 싶다.

"Is it any good, and does it do any good? Mockingbird indisputably did quite a lot of good, and it’s very good at what it sets out to do. There’s a reason Mockingbird is so loved: it is charming, beautifully controlled and heart-warming. The answer to whether Watchman is any good aesthetically is simple: not very. The question of whether it may do any good morally is more complicated, ..."

결론적으로 Sarah 씨는 앵무새 죽이기는 미국에 대한 우화이며, 파수꾼은 그 사회에 잠재되어 있는 인종차별에 대해 좀 더 세밀하게 보여주고 있으며 특히 이 부분은 사회 구성원 스스로 보고 싶지 않은 면이다, 라고 평하고 있다. 

"To Kill a Mockingbird has always been viewed as a parable about America. Go Set a Watchman is now forcing us to look more squarely at the racism lurking beneath, and we don’t like what we see. Our horror at discovering that Atticus was really a racist may be genuine, but it is also the rage of Caliban, seeing himself in the mirror. “As sure as time,” Uncle Jack tells Jean Louise in one of the book’s best sentences, “history is repeating itself, and as sure as man is man, history is the last place he’ll look for his lessons.” Watchman is nowhere near as good a novel as Mockingbird, but it might prove an equally significant one, if it helps us look to history for our lessons, rather than to our consoling, childish, whitewashed fables."

 나 같은 경우도 Atticus와 그 역을 맡은 그레고리 펙에 대한 그 좋은 인상을 버리고 싶지 않아서 정말로 파수꾼을 손에 넣기를 주저하고 있다. 정말로 평들을 좀 많이 본 다음에 사야겠다.
